Boston University Professor Killed Falling Off a Staircase

David K. Jones, 40, of Milton, a Boston University professor, died in an accident in Boston on Saturday when he fell from a staircase across from the JFK/UMass MBTA station. Around 1:30 p.m., he was discovered across the street from the station at 599 Old Colony Ave. According to David Procopio, a spokesman for state police, the incident occurred on Saturday.

Police discovered that Jones, who was found dead at the site of the accident in Boston, was lying beneath a stairwell connecting Old Colony Road and the Columbia Road overpass. There was a space above where he was located. “A tentative report stated that the staircase was previously deemed hazardous and had been sealed for nearly 20 months,” said Procopio.

Jones was a senior lecturer at BU’s State health Department Law, Policy, and Management, according to a statement from Sandro Galea, Dean of the university’s School of Public Health. The community will gather in person and digitally for a funeral next Thursday.

Galea highlighted in his message to the campus community on Sunday that Jones began at BU in 2014, praising him as “an exceptional member of our community.”

According to a GoFundMe campaign set up to help his family, Jones left behind his wife, Sarah, and three children, Olivia, Anne, and Thomas. About $71,000 had already been raised from 3:30 p.m. with a stated target of $100,000.
